Bringing U.S. History Alive

On behalf of Highlander Way and Parker Middle School, we have exciting news to share.  Our current 7th Grade students will have the opportunity to experience their U.S. History Curriculum by traveling to Washington D.C. on May 8-11, 2019.  The trip will include touring important historical locations such as Gettysburg and Mount Vernon as well as touring the major monuments and sites in Washington D.C.  We are partnering with Student Adventures, a Michigan based tour company, to help provide the best opportunity possible. They have worked with schools all over the state to provide safe and memorable experiences to groups like ours.   An informational parent meeting was held on the evening of May 14, 2018.  If you were unable to attend, information is available in the HWMS Guidance Office.

All schools in Michigan including Highlander Way are required to report the immunization status of all 7th grade students as well as students who are new to the district.  In order to attend school, these students’ immunizations must be up-to-date or they must have a certified waiver on file.  Future immunization need letters will be sent home with report cards.

If your child is in need of immunizations, please contact your healthcare provider or the Livingston County Health Department to receive the immunizations that they need.

The Livingston County Health Department has immunization walk in clinics from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday and until 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday.  An administration fee per vaccine is charged.  There may be an additional charge for the cost of the vaccine depending on VFC (Vaccines for Children) eligibility requirements.  Programs are available to assist those that are unable to pay.  Please contact the LCHD to see if you qualify.  The LCHD is located at 2300 E. Grand River Avenue, Suite 102, in Howell between Golf Club and Chilson Roads.

Since January 1, 2015, schools are only allowed to accept non-medical waivers that have been certified by the local health department.  These waivers can be obtained from the health department and will be issued after receipt of education on the benefits of vaccination and the risks to the individual and the community, if not vaccinated.  If you are choosing not to immunize, please call the Livingston County Health Department at 517-546-9850 for more information and to schedule an appointment.  Appointments are limited, so call now.

Up-dated immunization reports or the original certified waiver forms can be turned in at the Highlander Way Guidance Office at any time.

We do our best to have all information be correct and up-to-date.  If you have any questions or corrections, please e-mail Nancy Folk at folkn@howellschools.com.
