Communication!!
I will be using the HEJA app this year as a main method of
communication.  Please plan on using this APP on your phone to
receive important messages, schedule reminders, and more.
I will share the team code to join at the informational meeting
in June, in an email with all those who register
to participate for CC, and at the parent meeting
on August 27th, 4:00, at the tennis courts.

PLEASE Visit the Summer Running Schedule link for a summer schedule:

Sports Physicals - Please remind your student athletes
If a student participated in a school sport last year, they should have a valid sports physical (performed after 4/15/19) on file.  A new sports physical is not required this year for those students. However, they must complete the MHSAA Sports Health Questionnaire before they are permitted to begin practice on August 10 or 12.  The questionnaire is attached and is available on the MHSAA and Howell athletics websites.  Check with Sue for questions regarding who has physicals on file.
If a student did not participate in a sport last year, they must have a sports physical performed 4/15/20 or later.
Health questionnaires and sports physicals can be mailed, emailed, faxed or hand delivered to the athletic office and must be on file before they are permitted to begin official practice on August 10 or 12.  Coaches should not be collecting these documents.
Eligibility
For Fall Sports Only, a student is eligible if they passed 5 classes last semester.  There is no waiver for Fall sports.  We will return to our normal eligibility policy for Winter sports.

GOOD FORM RUNNING MONTH AT PLAYMAKERS IN OKEMOS!

Can 6th graders run?  – YES,6th graders are now considered to be part of the competition and run the full two miles with the 7th and 8th grade runners.  They are scored with all of the other runners and will train just like the rest of the team and travel on the bus with the rest of the team.  During some of the invitationals, 6th graders run separately and only run 1 mile, but that is not true of most races.

MANDATORY PRACTICE BEGINS ON

MONDAY OF THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF

SCHOOL! (AUG. 24th this year)-

However, it is expected that everyone on the

team will have already completed the summer

running schedule to the best of their ability

prior to the start of the season.

Practice STARTS @ 2:35PM and ENDS at 4:30PM
.

Practices will take place Monday - Thursday.
No Friday practices.

Most meets are on Wednesdays @ 4PM.

We generally meet at the LARGE TREE near the tennis courts for home meets and practices.

We meet at the end of the lower 6th grade hallway for away meets.

APPROPRIATE CONDUCT IS REQUIRED ALL TIMES AND ESPECIALLY WHILE WAITING FOR COACH TO ARRIVE.  ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR INCLUDES- CHANGING INTO PRACTICE ATTIRE, EATING HEALTHY SNACKS, FILLING WATER BOTTLES, WARMING UP, STRETCHING, AND TALKING WITH FRIENDS.  NO HORSEPLAY OR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR WILL BE TOLERATED AND COULD RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

EQUIPMENT:

Runners should have at least two pairs of running shorts, at least one pair of running shoes (these can be either road or trail running shoes), in addition runners can purchase cross country spikes for meets if desired (we will discuss what length spike to get with these shoes), at least two short sleeve running shirts (performance wicking materials are best), at least one long sleeve shirt/sweatshirt, and at least one pair of running pants/tights.  A nylon windbreaker is helpful as well.  A DIGITAL WATCH/GPS TRACKER WITH A STOPWATCH FUNCTION WOULD BE A GREAT TOOL AS WELL.

Howell no longer charges athletic participation fees

COACH INFO:  My name is Jason Lounds.  Please call me Coach or Coach Lounds.  This is my sixth year coaching cross country here.  I coached soccer at the high school for 7 years and La Crosse for one year before making the switch to middle school sports.  In addition to Cross Country, I also coach 7th and 8th grade boys and girls basketball at HWMS.

I have been a runner and competitive athlete since middle school.  I love running and all that it brings to its participants.  I ran Cross Country in high school and I credit that with giving me a lifelong passion for running.  I am a certified fitness and nutrition coach.  I look forward to being able to share my love of running with the runners at Highlander Way Middle School.

I have been a teacher in Howell schools for 20 years.  I teach Art at the highschool.
The best way to contact me during the day is by using my school email:

loundsj@howellschools.com
or the team HEJA app
