8th Grade Science Snip It 4.14.13

8th Grade Science Snip It 4.14.13

We have entered the home stretch of the year.  I have really enjoyed working with this year's 8th graders.  They are a nice group of students.

With the Holocaust field trip, we had a sporadic last week with attendance.  Students were working on a chapter 17 guided reading packet.  The sections within chapter 17 provided students with foundational pieces on which to draw for the rest of the quarter's learning targets. Students focused on How other parts of the Earth affect the composition of the atmosphere, How heat moves through and affects the amosphere, Why the temperature varies, and how human activity affects the atmosphere.  I have attached a completed guided reading for those students who may have not completed the reading.  On Monday, students will be using the guided reading packet to take an open note quiz. Important concepts for students to be prepared to answer are: What does solar energy that enters the atmosphere directly affect, what are 3 ways humans affect the atmosphere that may cause changes, what's the difference between weather and climate, what type of radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer, and why would a decrease in ozone create a public health concern.  Lastly, students wil be asked to write a scientific explanation to answer the question: How does the amount of sunlight Earth receives affect weather, climate and living things.  Explanations should include a claim, at least 3 pieces of evidence and a reasoning statement.

This next week students will also be using a computer simulation to observe what gases in the atmosphere are considered greenhouse gases and how much energy they absorb.  We will also be exploring our carbon footprint and how our choices affect the atmosphere and how changes in the atmosphere affect the climate.

Just a reminder also that next Friday students will not have school as the district will have professional development.

Have a good week.
Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
